Trip to Las Vegas!!!

Published by abby under Anong Balita

It was Jeff’s b-day last May 3 so my husband decided to go with Jeff as he plan to celebrate his bday in Vegas. We arrive there on a friday afternoon so what we did is stroll as we went to see the different casinos in each hotel. It is not that tiring as you go from one place to another but as you go back where you have seen the site already, thats the time you will feel that you have been walking for quite sometime.
My hubby gave me a budget to gamble while he seats beside me as he waits for his free drinks to come. We didn’t win but it was fun since it was the first time I have ever been in Vegas.
We also had a chance to talk to a Filipino working in the casino who happens to be a realtor as well. We are considering of moving somewhere closer to Win’s work but because of the prices of the houses in Vegas, we got interested too. He was telling us just how it is like in all states where the value of the houses are going down. Even the brand new homes there are quite cheap well I mean relative to the cost of living here in CA. Generally, it was quite informative that we considered it at least during our trip there.
The following day we spent most of the day walking again with Jeff and Lorraine at Caesars palace, we had a brunch at Bellagio then head to Fat Tuesday at the Caesars Palace. The drink was delicious but I am not an alcohol drinker so that 750ml of Pina Colada and Champagne later on hit me. Well my hubby got two servings of that drink plus extra shot which you wouldn’t feel anything at first but then that night we took turns throwing up in the rest room. What an experience:) And we did save for dinner since we cannot tolerate eating.
Anyways, we will be going back again this July in the other side of Vegas. We stayed in Excalibur for this trip but since next time it is work related we will be staying in Venetian. Hopefully this time we will win some cash and no more throwing up except if I get pregnant again:)

Allowing network connections to MySQL in OS X Leopard Server

Published by Sherwin under OS X, SQL, Technology

For the past couple of days I’ve been trying to set up one of our XServe running Leopard Server at work for web hosting. I was able to configure the Web, AFP, and SMB properly. The problem I was having was configuring MySQL. It was easy to enable but trying to connect to it from other computers in the same domain was the problem. There’s a checkbox with “Allow network connections” in the Server Admin section of MySQL. So I checked it, save, and restarted it. I still wasn’t able to connect. I checked for firewall settings. I pinged the host and got a response. I couldn’t figure out what was wrong. So I googled it.

The common answer I found was to edit the /etc/mysql/my.cnf file. Well it’s not there but I did find a /etc/my.cnf file. So I tried editing that file and restarting. It didn’t work.

Then I remembered that the php.ini file that Leopard Server is using isn’t in the default location /etc/php.ini, but it ran the /private/etc/php.ini. So I looked in there and found another my.cnf file. I edited the file by adding # in front of skip-networking entry. I restarted it and it finally worked.

So here’s what you need to do:

  • Go into Server Admin and check the Allow network connections and save
  • Comment out the skip-networking entry from /private/etc/my.cnf
  • Add the IP address of the computer you will be accessing MySQL remotely
  • Give it the privileges it needs
  • Restart MySQL

That should allow you to connect to MySQL running on Leopard Server remotely.

My first YouTube videos

Published by Sherwin under Anong Balita, Technology

After having an account for more than a year, I finally uploaded my first YouTube video. It was pretty easy using MPEGStreamclip to encode it into DV format then import it to iMovie. Once in iMovie, you can do your basic edits and share it in Quicktime. Then you can upload it onto YouTube. If you have iMovie 08, there’s a built in share to YouTube which is very easy to use. It will ask for you account information and it will upload everything for you. Only thing is I hate how they designed iMovie 08. So for my first video, I uploaded the on-site video slideshow created by Ariel Javelosa’s crew during our wedding.

After playing with that I Tivo’d the Liliw Tsinelas festival 2008 special during Unang Hirit. This is when I found it that you can only have up to about 10 minutes per video. So I had to split it up. Here they are.

It was fun and easy. I may start uploading more videos.
