Spotify’s Radio App

I’m really liking the new apps you can install for Spotify. It gives you stations based on the mostly listened to artists. And because Spotify is online, it will track your listening activities throughout multiple devices. You can also create your own radio station. The monthly subscription fee is only $10. I figured it’s a price of a full CD every month. With a subscription, I can listen to any song I want. There are other apps as well, but the radio one is my favorite so far.

Refurbished Solo HD headphones

Monster Cables, the makers of the Beats by Dr. Dre headphones, recently had a sale that took an additional 50% their refurbished products. I’ve been staying away from the Beats series headphones because they are just hyped and overpriced, though I have yet to try them out. I currently am using the Sennheiser HD202 and love them. I’m not a big audiophile so my needs aren’t too great. With the sale, I figured it’s a good opportunity to try them out. If they suck, well they’re only $50. I ended up getting one for my brother in law as well.

First off, I doubt I’ll ever order another thing from Monster Cables’ website. They’re track order page has been broken. I eventually called their customer service and was on hold for 21 minutes until I was able to talk to someone. Six days later my order was finally shipped. I did, however, receive my items the next day – although it’s from a location 4 hours from my house.

I was excited to see them and visually they are appealing. But it stops there. I plugged them in to my computer and fired up Spotify to start listening. My jaw dropped from how horrible they sounded. Then I thought, maybe it’s the song I’m playing so I changed it, and I changed it, next, next… same crap quality sound. Then I thought, maybe my sound card sucks so I grabbed my HTC Sensation 4G phone and listened to some songs. Nope, still crap! Finally, I grabbed my iPod thinking it’s the devices I’m using. The sound quality has improved, but not by much. I played with the EQ settings and well, they just suck to me.

I’m so disappointed. Maybe I should’ve bought the Studio HD. But again, I wasn’t sold even before I bought these ones, so I didn’t want to take a chance and pay more. It could be that they’re refurbished that the sound quality sucks but both pairs are consistently crap to me. I don’t know how people are paying regular price for these. They sound like small headphones with insolated pads. Turn up the bass and volume, all you get is distortion. Guess I’m thankful I didn’t go for the hype and paid full price but I still ended up getting 2 for $100. Maybe I can walk around with these unplugged and look cool. But still doesn’t change me spending that money, even for refurbished ones.

More problems with OCZ Vertex Plus SSD

So I‘ve had my OCZ Vertex Plus since August 2011 and since then, I’m unable to install an operating system on it. I’ve been able to use it as a storage drive but that’s it.

I have tried this SSD on a total of 4 different PC.

  1. ASUS P8Z68V-Pro with Intel i7 2600K
  2. Gigabyte Z68MA-D2H-B3 with Intel i5 2500K
  3. Compaq Mini 110
  4. MSI E350IS-E45

I did the following…

  • The bios recognizes the SSD and the correct SATA port.
  • Using AHCI mode
  • Tried different SATA ports
  • I’m running the latest firmware and bios versions.

I get as far as selecting the hard drive to install Windows on and it doesn’t see anything. I don’t have any other drives connected except the SSD drive. I tried to use an internal and external (USB) DVD drive. I’ve tried to use a USB thumb drive to install Windows. I’ve tried different discs of the same version of Windows. I’ve tried different versions of Windows 7. I’ve tried install Ubuntu. The same problem occurs, I get an error that it doesn’t detect the hard drive as soon as I’m ready to install the OS. I have moved on with other hard drives with the first 3 PC on my list above. And all installed correctly and functioning.

I finally sent a RMA request to OCZ and after a couple of days of communicating with support via email, it looks like they are granting me my RMA. Here are some pics I took from my latest attempt. It’s so odd.

As you can see from the above image, the bios recognizes the SSD.

SATA Mode is set to AHCI.

During the Windows 7 installation, it doesn’t detect the SSD drive.

After Dump GoDaddy Day

I finally got confirmation of one domain successfully transferred over to my new registrar. One more domain to go. I’m leaving this domain with GoDaddy for now. I’ve also cancelled my hosting account and moved back to my old host, Hostmonster. They had a good deal during the holidays at $3.95 per month, so I signed up for 2 years. Of course if I cancel early, they will refund the amount for the unused time.

This is the first time I’m transferring domains. It’s easy but in my case I had paid for privacy information. If you have this, there are additional steps you have to take. It was a little headache at first but I just didn’t want to keep most of my stuff with GoDaddy.

My new registrar is Namecheap. We’ll see how they are. I’ve read mixed reviews so I’m not comfortable moving this domain to them yet.
